aurangabad: vikas jain the ruling bjp-shiv sena alliance was on tuesday elected the 12th mayor of aurangabad municipal corporation defeating his congress-led alliance rival kaisar khan by a margin of 32 votes. jain, who belongs to shiv sena, bagged 54 votes while his khan samajwadi party polled 22 votes. six votes were declared invalid. altogether 82 members had participated in the election.
the mayoral polls also saw the bjp-shiv sena alliance being openly supported by the republican party of india (rpi), led by gangadhar gade, and bahujan mahasangh for the first time since the saffron alliance came to power in this civic body over a decade back. the poll outcome also indicated that as many as 10 members from the opposition congress-led front had voted for the bjp-shiv sena candidate. due to the support of the rpi, bahujan mahasangh and the congress-led front members, mr jain became the first person to elected to the post of the first citizen with a lead of 32 votes. as per an agreement between the ruling bjp-shiv sena alliance, the post of the mayor has to shared between the two parties for 15 months each.
